Chocolat Vitale: 6257 3rd Ave NW
Art by Ben Chamberlain. About the Artist: If it looks like there are stories behind these images, that’s because there are—I didn’t really find my visual muse until I began writing my own stories, and then found I had a strange urge to illustrate them. Some of these urges worked themselves out digitally, using the “Lasso Tool” in Photoshop to carve figures out of a digital canvas bit by bit.

More recently, I’ve been getting back into the messy side of things with ink and paper—not as much room for error as the oil paints I used to work with, but they have something of the sharpness of the computer work. I’ve been getting ink pointers from the classic illustrators of the pulp days: Frazetta, Andrew Loomis, Scottish artist Sydney Jordan’s classic “Jeff Hawke” adventure strip, and Mac Raboy’s work
on the old “Flash Gordon” daily comic serial.

Before all that, I made off with an art degree from The University of Chicago, created graphics for my own web design start-up, and wrote story chapters and interactive quests for a little massively multiplayer game called “The Matrix Online.”

I live and work in Ballard, and can be reached at smbhax@gmail.com. Artist present.
