About the Artists:
Thompson is interested in exploring through image, the human need for narrative and our relationship to our own histories and the stories of other lives. In her paintings she imbues animals and robots with totemic powers and she attempts to bring a sense of history to all of her subjects. Osgood paints idiosyncratic characters and animals with a bold palette. He's a people watcher and enjoys spending time following the emotions that flicker throughout a person’s face during an interaction - his art is the expression of these every day emotions. CASH's latest work has been influenced by John James Audubon, Pablo Picasso, Jean Michel Basquiat, hand drawn fonts and street art and graffiti. He uses spray paint, acrylic, charcoal and oil pastels to create his works on canvas, paper, and wood. His paintings reflect the textures of the city, as well as the colors and spontaneity found in nature.

"Crowspin" by Kamilla White

Two Birds Tattoo: 7408 Greenwood Ave N
Artist, Kamilla White has observed her local crows for a number of years, and is intrigued by their keen intelligence and their intricate co-evolutionary relationships with human beings. She began using crow and raven imagery in her work around 2001, and developed the current versions of her crow sculptures around 2006. Ms. White plans to continue consulting the corvid community for inspiration and ideas for many years to come.

Kamilla begins each crow sculpture with an inner core of compressed aluminum foil. She then adds legs of steel wire and covers the inner core with an outer layer of black polymer clay. Once the clay is smoothed out, she adds blue goldstone beads for the eyes and draws in wings and facial details with a pin tool. Some crows are embellished further with clay accessories. All are baked in the home oven. After baking, the legs are painted black and the crow is given a charm to wear around its neck on a thin leather cord.

Kamilla White earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Washington State University. Her affinity for three-dimensional art spilled over into her paintings during her last year at WSU, when she used cast paper masks and body parts in several pieces for her senior thesis project. A minor emphasis in Ceramics allowed her to explore her sculptural inclinations and develop her 3D visions. Kamilla has been using polymer clay in her artwork since the mid-1990s. Artist present.

"Bicycles Open Doors” is a collection of photography by Leigh Pate, a local cyclist and photographer and features photographs from beautiful, vibrant India.

Artist statement:
Traveling by bicycle takes you far off the tourist path and into beautiful rural areas rarely seen by Westerners. Local people are generous and kind, and bicycles open doors to experience their daily lives. These photographs capture unique images of the people met along the way as they go about their daily lives. Even the humblest person from the poorest village will labor in the fields dressed in a colorful sari, or take their goods to market on an ox cart painted bright colors and decorated with flowers. We expect images of India to be about grinding poverty, overcrowding and filth. These photographs convey the beauty and strength we often don't see while on the typical tourist trail, and celebrate the color and beauty that is part of everyone's everyday life. Artist present.

"Power in Numbers" features the contemporary print works of Seattle artists: Zach Bohnenkamp, Jen Bauer, Joey Katzer, Chris Rollins and Nate Stottrup. Many times printmaking is little understood by the layman, but a lot of the methods used in printmaking like wood-block cuts and engravings are an intense and tedious process. The outcome seems effortless in many people's eyes. Jen Bauer, who utilizes the engraving method, illustrates this point well in her artists statement...

"Printmakers spend days on end hunched over a piece of metal scratching away at it with another piece of metal until it kind of looks like something they might be going for, backwards. The tedium and labor are beneficial, however. The time it takes to make a print is as much time as it takes to contemplate and understand the subject, and this could generate the elevated and powerful subject matter prints are known for. Printmaking is an intellectual medium and printmakers are an intellectual sort, and needless to say intelligence is sometimes paired with a proportional degree of insanity. While the insanity may or may not lend some interest to the print, the question remains, was the artist insane before picking up printmaking, or was it the tedious and laborious process that made him/her that way? " Artists present.

I also enjoy using vibrant contracting color palettes to elicit a "pop" factor, often juxtaposing bright vivid colors with depressing emotions to provide balance and to surprise the viewer. Tasty to host Anthony Angel Trunk Show: Wed, Sept 21 from 6-9pm

On Wednesday night, September 21st from 6:00 – 9:00pm Tasty hosts a Trunk Sale with the fine art jewelry of Anthony Angel.

Statement from the artist:
“The jewelry I create is influenced by my long history of being an artist. I have worked in many mediums, but making jewelry has been the most gratifying of all. This is because I get to see how my artwork compliments the style of the wearer. As I design each piece of jewelry I take into account the gems color, shape and even history. I handpick all of my gemstones to ensure their quality by selecting them by their clarity, color and cut. The final stage is to bring the design to life by constructing the piece of jewelry in gold and silver with the gemstones. I take great pride in the design and construction of my artwork and I know it will be reflected in the many compliments you will receive from admirers.”

To add extra flair to the one night event, Fly Girl Feathers will be offering feather & tinsel hair extensions, feather earrings and other accessories. Plus, Shelby from Stila Cosmetics will be here to enhance your inner beauty! Ah, did I mention Champagne Cocktails? Oh yeah, that too!

Realism is making a comeback. After a few years of lying low, representational art is back with a vengeance—artists are creating figurative work with passion and finesse, but now they’re adding their own unique twists. In a fitting gesture for these tumultuous times, the artists that were chosen for “Askew” create intense, layered imagery that challenges our perceptions of “normal” and makes us think twice about what’s real and what’s not. The work is sometimes dramatic and sometimes subtle, but it’s always well crafted and wonderful. “Askew” is curated by Seattle artists, Chris Sheridan & Kate Protage and features the contemporary works of: Yvette Endrijautzki, Carl Faulkner, Zanetka Gawronski, Larkin, Matthew Lewis, Aaron Jasinski, Spyder Peterka, AJ Power, Jim Stoccardo, James Walker, and Andrea Wicklund. Showcasing the work of two local photographers, Stan Raucher and Todd Smith. The photographers each work with black and white photography, but their works explore the juxtaposition of urban and rural topics. Raucher's series Metro documents the behavior of ordinary people in mass transit systems in several countries and cultures. As individuals interact with one another in these tightly-packed public spaces, occasionally situations that are unexpected, mysterious, humorous or poignant unfold. Todd Smith's series Bins documents fruit bin lots, as the unintentional architecture of the region where he was born. His photographs are dynamic studies in architectural photography, shadows and light, densities and graphic representation. Artist present.

Two Birds Tattoo: 7408 Greenwood Ave N
Artwork by Betsy Barnum. Artist Statement: I use my works on paper to describe my life, expressing my thoughts and emotions about a specific moment or circumstance through my relationships with those I am close to. I build up thin layers of paint, ink and pencil to conceal and reveal images the way emotions and behavior are unconsciously layered to hide or signal something to others. The gesture and composition of the figures in my work are very important, as they are the first indicators of the work’s meaning. I use recurring objects from piece to piece as symbols or metaphors for people and ideas. For example, I often use a typewriter to represent myself, or birds as metaphors for fear and emotion. I use paper as my surface because of its flexibility, smoothness, and capacity for erasure. Like a palimpsest, it shows the progression and history of layers of marks. Like skin it wrinkles and fights back when worked on, asserting its personality into the painting or drawing. Like journal pages, my work is an ongoing narrative, each piece chronologically linked to the others. Each gesture, color, layer, and object is significant, and each work interacts with the others to establish meaning through a repetition of these elements. Artist present.

"Inc." ~ where wall meets canvas tasks mural artists with "incorporating" the walls into the canvas hung in front of them. Each artist or team was designated an area of wall space in the gallery to do whatever they wanted to it and the whole group was given the outside entry wall to the gallery to collaborate on. The artists were given 4 days leading up to the show and without giving too much away... you're going to be amazed at the evolution of our venue. Artists present.

Gainsbourg: 8550 Greenwood Ave N
Best known for his surrealistic cityscapes and sultry portraits, Ethan Jack Harrington’s paintings provide viewers with a whimsical perspective of the constantly evolving world. As a plein-air oil painter, the artist captures scenes in-person, in real-time; when a subject earns his attention, Harrington sets up his easel on a sidewalk, rooftop or in an alley and quickly paints the area as he sees it at that moment. Influenced and taught by his father Jack Harrington, a professional impressionistic oil painter and illustrator, Harrington has painted professionally for 20 years. His intensely unique style and skill has developed into what is now an easily recognizable trademark among collectors.

Dara weaves architectural images into multi-layered and multi-visioned paintings. Influences range from simply having an architect dad and a builder brother, to having lost her apartment and its contents including her art work to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, to looking back at the Denny Regrade as her current studio on Western Avenue is slated for demise to make room for the tunnel, to a desire to reclaim and recycle by using recycled canvases, nails from the ReStore, and appropriated objects recovered from industrial building projects.
