URBAN LIGHT STUDIOS UNVEILS ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHY BY GREENWOOD CAT

Cooper the Cat Exhibits Artistic and Inspiring Images

Beloved Seattle cat Cooper will present his first ever gallery exhibit opening to the public February 13, 2009 at URBAN LIGHT STUDIOS during the monthly Greenwood-Phinney Art Walk. Cooper’s photographs have led to international fame from Animal Planet and BBC Radio to Seattle Weekly and the front page of the Seattle P-I. With a fan base over 500,000 worldwide, his images will be on display for the first time in an exhibition form. In addition, a portion of the proceeds from Cooper’s art show will benefit PAWS, the Progressive Animal Welfare Society. Protecting animals since 1967, PAWS Cat City Seattle is just steps away from URBAN LIGHT STUDIOS on Greenwood Avenue.

Cooper’s photography started as an experiment by loving cat owners Michael and Deirdre Cross in order to understand their furry pal’s daily adventures. They soon realized that his perspective on the world (at six inches high) displaying light, color and movement, classify Cooper as a talented albeit accidental abstract artist. Seattle residents are invited to experience these dynamic images and discover a unique concept in photographic art – that of art without intent.

Cooper is a 3 year old American Shorthair cat living in Seattle. Once a week for the past year, Cooper has donned a lightweight digital camera designed to capture an image at two minute intervals. His companions never dreamed Cooper’s photography would lead to such acclaim. Thousands of images later, a unique body of work has emerged. The photographs range from amusing, stunningly beautiful and even strangely haunting. The images and the unusual artist have attracted attention from across the globe as people learn Cooper’s story and fall in love with his perspective on the world.

URBAN LIGHT STUDIOS is a photo studio and gallery in the Greenwood neighborhood dedicated to exhibiting striking and innovative artwork from local and national artists. Housed in the Greenwood Collective building, the gallery has been lovingly restored, preserving its 80-year industrial character and heritage. Opening a new exhibit the second Friday of each month to coincide with Art Up Greenwood-Phinney monthly art walk, the gallery will offer the art community a unique experience, showing works by both well known and undiscovered artists that can't be seen elsewhere.

Gallery hours: Wednesday - Friday, 12:00-6:00pm or by Appointment.

PAWS is a Northwest leader in protecting animals since 1967. PAWS shelters homeless dogs and cats, rehabilitates injured and orphaned wildlife, and empowers people to demonstrate compassion and respect for animals in their daily lives.
