Mural at site of Greenwood arson to be unveiled this Thurs, Dec 31st
Mural celebrates artistry and creativity of neighborhood
SEATTLE – December 29, 2009 – Taproot Theatre Company and Seattle Mural Art will unveil the mural created for the site of the October 23 arson in Greenwood on Thursday, December 31, at 11 a.m. Taproot Theatre Company commissioned Seattle Mural Art an affliate of Bherd Studios to create a mural to cover the safety fence where the Eleanor Roosevelt Building stood until the arson. Concerned about leaving a hole in the core of the Greenwood business district, Taproot Theatre, which owns the property, saw the mural as a way to add beauty to the neighborhood and facilitate more art. The mural celebrates Greenwood’s character and artistry, and demonstrates its resilience in the wake of the fires.

Phoenix Rising in Greenwood: Taproot Theatre Commissions Mural Artists
Taproot Theatre has commissioned 3 Seattle artists to create a mural installation on an 8 ft high by 89 foot long temporary wall in honor of the businesses that were lost after the arsons in our neighborhood. Above is an in progress shot of the main focal point of the mural symbolizing the re-birth of the Greenwood neighborhood - the phoenix rising from its ashes. When first contacted by Taproot, the artists got together to brainstorm ideas that would best resonate with the community and Zach Bohnenkamp, one of the 3 artists came up with the idea of the Phoenix. Other features of the mural will include a scene from the annual car show, a fireman rescuing a PAWs cat, and a call to action for the monthly artwalk "Art Up Greenwood-Phinney".
You may recognize the handiwork of these three artists: John Osgood, Kevin "Sensei23" Sullivan and Zach Bohnenkamp from the recently installed mural at ProSki on Aurora. Neighbors who have heard about the mural have been waiting to see the artists working on the wall outdoors, but the artists have been stealthily cloistered in a nearby location and the mural will not be totally revealed until the unveiling ceremony TBA soon. The artists are a part of Seattle Mural Art which is an affliate of Bherd Studios Gallery located in Greenwood.

Artist: Amy Woidtke of EcoKind Design
Snowman Name: Mr. Snoman
About the Snowman: As an interior decorator with an eco-friendly focus, I am conscious that not everyone likes traditional red and green holiday decor themes, and I am mindful of using products in various shades of green such as having multiple uses and containing recycled, repurposed and nontoxic materials. Initially, I designed Mr. Snoman to fit a black, silver and white theme. However, his recycled material scarf and hat are removable, to allow for flexibility of one's color theme. Created with non-toxic acrylic craft paint, recycled buttons and fabric, and a dried plant stem.
About the Artist: Amy has been creative all her life in one way or another, with particular passions for helping others, interior decorating, love, and the environment. Through her business, EcoKind Design.com, she gets to play with these passions to help every day singles and couples create affordable, eco-friendly spaces that attract, nurture and rekindle the love that they desire.

Taproot Theatre announces new holiday production
New play, new location, but the show will go on despite fire
SEATTLE – November 2, 2009 – Taproot Theatre’s annual holiday production will go on despite the October 23 fire. Taproot Theatre brings the hit play It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play back to the stage as it holds its holiday production at the Stage One Theatre at North Seattle Community College. Unable to find a venue that could accommodate the world premiere of John Longenbaugh’s Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Christmas Carol, Taproot Theatre brings back one of the most popular Christmas plays in its history. Adapted for the stage by Joe Landry and directed by Karen Lund, It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play runs November 27 through December 30, with a pay-what-you-can performance on November 25. There are no preview performances.
Clarence needs his wings and George Bailey needs… well George needs Clarence. Live out a holiday classic as a part of our “live studio audience” when Taproot Theatre brings It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play to the stage. Set in 1947 as a radio broadcast, this heartwarming tale will remind you and yours of the important things in life and send you home laughing, loving and living the magic of Christmas.
Live radio performances were most popular from 1920 until the advent of television in the 1950s. An audience would be brought in to the studio, and hit films such as It’s a Wonderful Life would be produced live on the air for people who would listen while gathered around a radio in their living room.
Grant Goodeve and Mark Lund will reprise their roles from Taproot Theatre’s 2006 production of It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play. The cast also features Jesse Notehelfer, Eric Riedmann and Candace Vance. The production team includes scenic and sound designer Mark Lund, costume designer Sarah Burch Gordon and lighting designer Jody Briggs. Sarah Dale Rice serves as stage manager and Judy Naegeli as dramaturg.
Patrons who purchased tickets for Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Christmas Carol will be moved into comparable seats on the corresponding nights of the new production. If they had tickets for the preview performances, which have been canceled, Taproot Theatre will contact them to arrange their new tickets. Taproot Theatre’s Dinner & Theatre events will take place at the new location, catered by The Upper Crust. Taproot Theatre will also issue refunds when necessary.
Taproot Theatre plans to produce the world premiere of Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Christmas Carol next year. It will hold two staged readings at Seattle Pacific University’s McKinley Auditorium on December 4 and 5 this year at 8 p.m. Those readings will be free; no reservations are necessary.

Taproot Theatre renews commitment to Greenwood neighborhood in wake of reported arson
SEATTLE – October 29, 2009 – As investigators search for clues in last Friday’s fire in Greenwood, which is being called arson, Taproot Theatre is renewing its commitment to the neighborhood. In response to the news, Taproot is releasing the following statement:
Taproot Theatre Company is brokenhearted to learn that the fire that devastated four of our neighboring businesses and damaged our theatre was reported to have been deliberately set. When Taproot Theatre moved into Greenwood, crime in the neighborhood decreased almost immediately. In the years since, we’ve watched Greenwood blossom into a vibrant community that’s focused on the arts, promoting small businesses and protecting the environment—values that we promote, as well, and that represent the spirit of Seattle. Greenwood deserves to have a top-notch theatre in its midst, and we at Taproot Theatre love this neighborhood and will continue bringing people from across the region to Greenwood for years to come.
We are saddened for the four businesses that lost everything in this fire; those businesspeople are tremendous, hard-working, and also dedicated to their work in this neighborhood.
People wishing to make donations to Taproot Theatre should visit taproottheatre.org for instructions. Donations to the other Greenwood businesses may be made through the Greenwood Fire Relief Fund at Chase Bank at 85th and Greenwood.

Taproot Theatre performances, classes continue despite Greenwood fire
SEATTLE – October 27, 2009 – Taproot Theatre staff members continue operations after Friday’s fire, which caused significant damage and left the theatre unusable for an indefinite amount of time. Despite the fire, the theatre held closing weekend performances of Enchanted April, thanks to Seattle Children’s Theatre, which made its facilities available for Saturday’s two performances. The cast gave its first Saturday performance a mere 24 hours after plans to host the shows at SCT were solidified. The cast, crew and director Karen Lund gathered on Friday night to restage the production, staff members were able to retrieve costumes from Taproot’s costume shop, and the show went on to accolades and standing ovations.
Though Friday evening’s performance was canceled, Taproot kept its arrangement to perform the opening scenes of Enchanted April during the afternoon ArtsFund Annual Meeting. In addition, Taproot Theatre’s Road Company, which performs social-issues plays at schools across the Pacific Northwest, performed its afternoon production of Alexander and the Dragon at Oakwood Elementary School in Tacoma.
Taproot Theatre’s Acting Studio is holding all acting classes as usual, though it will find new locations for those normally taught at the theatre.
On these first business days after the fire, Taproot Theatre’s production staff are preparing to move the costume shop, scene shop and production offices, which were previously located in the theatre, to Piper Village. That development’s owner, Gary Brunt, has generously donated space to Taproot Theatre in this interim time.
Taproot Theatre learned today that the fire did enter the theatre building. As the days go on our gratefulness to the Seattle Fire Department increases. Over 100 firefighters worked tirelessly and risked their lives to protect the theatre on Friday. Formal investigations resumed today and the fire department continues to offer its support.
As the staff works on the next steps, they would like to thank everyone for the incredible support and encouragement—both in the immediate aftermath of the fire and in the present. The Seattle theatre community, especially, has been extraordinarily gracious and generous, along with our neighbors in Greenwood and our patrons. Special thanks go out to Seattle Children’s Theatre, IATSE, Theatre Puget Sound and Gary Brunt.
