Featuring the art of Jill Labieniec. Childhood memories of attic treasures nestled away in dusty corners and piled high in cardboard boxes is the inspiration for this show. This collection is made up of Gocco prints, a process similar to screen printing that uses a Japanese child’s toy to make detailed and sophisticated prints. Artist present.

His work features multi-faceted interpretations of emotion and perception by utilizing shared lines, forms and color between characters. He has worked diligently to create pieces that the viewer can study and be able to see new perspectives each time they go back. He purposefully plays with the subconscious mind, directing the audience both literally and figuratively. His goal with this series is to have you “reading between the lines” to find your own meaning within his work. Artist present.

The Showroom @Bherd Gallery (Greenwood Collective)
8537 Greenwood Ave N, Suite 1
In The Showroom, Bherd represented artists Siolo Thompson, CASH & John Osgood featuring their recent works.

About the Artists:
Thompson is interested in exploring through image, the human need for narrative and our relationship to our own histories and the stories of other lives. In her paintings she imbues animals and robots with totemic powers and she attempts to bring a sense of history to all of her subjects. Osgood paints idiosyncratic characters and animals with a bold palette. He's a people watcher and enjoys spending time following the emotions that flicker throughout a person’s face during an interaction - his art is the expression of these every day emotions. CASH's latest work has been influenced by John James Audubon, Pablo Picasso, Jean Michel Basquiat, hand drawn fonts and street art and graffiti. He uses spray paint, acrylic, charcoal and oil pastels to create his works on canvas, paper, and wood. His paintings reflect the textures of the city, as well as the colors and spontaneity found in nature.

Lynn enjoys all variations of art and has explored many techniques, but seems to lean toward collage and multidimensional acrylics. She is a self taught painter and has learned her techniques through many "happy accidents". Lynn created her mixed-media paintings to explore her interests and fascination with old buildings and unique architecture. She loves and admires anything old... something that has a story all its own. She enjoys abstract art, due to each individual that views a painting will have a different opinion or "view'. Lynn loves to hear what people "see" within her paintings, it motivates her to create more.
Her little "friends" are a new addition to her art family. She started with abstract... and am now exploring an interest in painting people. Lynn’s "people" are a little twisted... but, fun. Check out Lynn’s webite, www.hollowmoonz.com to learn more and see some of her work. Artist present.

“No Witches Allowed” featuring the works of Sasha Barr and Megan Hall of WONDER THUNDER. No Witches Allowed is a collection of enchanted artwork by Seattle artists Meagan Hall and Sasha Barr of Wonder Thunder. Through screen-printing, collage, and some haphazard stitchery, Wonder Thunder battles superstitions, bad dreams, and other haunted nonsense. In this exploration, Wonder Thunder has challenged a number of old wives tales and myths, carelessly resting hats on beds and spitting in the mouths of dogs. This work is a testament to the power of these seemingly nonsensical beliefs and their grip on our fragile minds. Artist present.

"Power in Numbers" features the contemporary print works of Seattle artists: Zach Bohnenkamp, Jen Bauer, Joey Katzer, Chris Rollins and Nate Stottrup. Many times printmaking is little understood by the layman, but a lot of the methods used in printmaking like wood-block cuts and engravings are an intense and tedious process. The outcome seems effortless in many people's eyes. Jen Bauer, who utilizes the engraving method, illustrates this point well in her artists statement...

"Printmakers spend days on end hunched over a piece of metal scratching away at it with another piece of metal until it kind of looks like something they might be going for, backwards. The tedium and labor are beneficial, however. The time it takes to make a print is as much time as it takes to contemplate and understand the subject, and this could generate the elevated and powerful subject matter prints are known for. Printmaking is an intellectual medium and printmakers are an intellectual sort, and needless to say intelligence is sometimes paired with a proportional degree of insanity. While the insanity may or may not lend some interest to the print, the question remains, was the artist insane before picking up printmaking, or was it the tedious and laborious process that made him/her that way? " Artists present.

Artist Statement:
I paint indiosyncratic characters with a bold palette in an urban art style mainly using acrylic and aerosol. I'm a people watcher and I enjoy spending time following the emotions that flicker throught a person's face during an interaction. I feel my art is the expression of these every day emotions and my collection of colorful and odd characters are inspired by life and the uncomfortable, forlorn and many times humorous circumstances that happen within it.

I also enjoy using vibrant contracting color palettes to elicit a "pop" factor, often juxtaposing bright vivid colors with depressing emotions to provide balance and to surprise the viewer. I think that peole enjoy looking at my work because they see something of themselves or people they know in my paintings, which often time eveokes a smile or a laugh.

Realism is making a comeback. After a few years of lying low, representational art is back with a vengeance—artists are creating figurative work with passion and finesse, but now they’re adding their own unique twists. In a fitting gesture for these tumultuous times, the artists that were chosen for “Askew” create intense, layered imagery that challenges our perceptions of “normal” and makes us think twice about what’s real and what’s not. The work is sometimes dramatic and sometimes subtle, but it’s always well crafted and wonderful. “Askew” is curated by Seattle artists, Chris Sheridan & Kate Protage and features the contemporary works of: Yvette Endrijautzki, Carl Faulkner, Zanetka Gawronski, Larkin, Matthew Lewis, Aaron Jasinski, Spyder Peterka, AJ Power, Jim Stoccardo, James Walker, and Andrea Wicklund. Two Birds Tattoo: 7408 Greenwood Ave N
Artwork by Betsy Barnum. Artist Statement: I use my works on paper to describe my life, expressing my thoughts and emotions about a specific moment or circumstance through my relationships with those I am close to. I build up thin layers of paint, ink and pencil to conceal and reveal images the way emotions and behavior are unconsciously layered to hide or signal something to others. The gesture and composition of the figures in my work are very important, as they are the first indicators of the work’s meaning. I use recurring objects from piece to piece as symbols or metaphors for people and ideas. For example, I often use a typewriter to represent myself, or birds as metaphors for fear and emotion. I use paper as my surface because of its flexibility, smoothness, and capacity for erasure. Like a palimpsest, it shows the progression and history of layers of marks. Like skin it wrinkles and fights back when worked on, asserting its personality into the painting or drawing. Like journal pages, my work is an ongoing narrative, each piece chronologically linked to the others. Each gesture, color, layer, and object is significant, and each work interacts with the others to establish meaning through a repetition of these elements. Artist present.

Bherd Studios Gallery presents the urban contemporary work of Seattle artists: Michelle Anderst, Joe Vollan and Chris Sheridan. Each artists work is themed around the inner workings of the mechanical, human anatomy and the soul.

Anderst explores the relationships between organic structure such as bones, veins & nerves to man-made structures such as circuitry and computer boards. She’s known for pairing “the insides” with old fashioned vintage wallpaper which creates an unusual feminine elegance to her compositions.

Vollan uses his signature style of surreal and macabre scenes that are inhabited by skeletal animals and robots to evoke a sense of wonderment, relevant to the fantastic and bizarre worlds he creates.

Sheridan’s work explores the essence of humanity and the soul. His work depicts scenes from myths and folklore that teach about morality, as well as delving into the insights of human nature. His strong illustrative background provides beautifully crafted imagery on oil and canvas. Artists present.

Gainsbourg: 8550 Greenwood Ave N

While taking classes in film making, he became intrigued with his current medium, still photography. He creates and captures singular frames, each describing a fully formed moment within a story ... explicit, but leaving the rest up to the viewer to decide. His body of work consists of three collections: portraits, nudes, and concept pieces. Sometimes surreal, or comical, and often dramatic, Lloyd's work is inspired by a cast of ground-breaking photographers, such as Man Ray and Helmut Newton.

Marty Gordon, Greenwood-Phinney Artist, Published in "Masters: Collage" book!

I think we all feel that Greenwood-Phinney has a plethora of talented artists right in our own backyard. But the proof is in the pudding. Marty Gordon, who is a renowned collage artist and lives in our neighborhood was recently published in a book called "Masters: Collage".

The book showcases 40 of the leading collage artists working today and Marty is one of them. Each artist has an 8 page profile including text and images of some of their work. Marty Gordon's work is one of my images on the cover. The book is available now through Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Masters-Collage-Major-Leading-Artists/dp/1600591086) or Barnes and Noble (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Masters/Lark-Books/e/9781600591082).

Intimate Concert Setting at Empty Sea Studios: March Line-up

Empty Sea Studios is a little hidden gem in our neighborhood that I just discovered. It is right there in plain sight, but it's still easy to miss and not know what it's all about. The studio is located in a renovated Craftsman house on Phinney Ave and they present acoustic music "as it's meant to be heard". There is limited seating and the audience gets a feel that they are getting their own private concert. Empty Sea Studios books concerts in traditional music from all parts of the world, acoustic forms of jazz, folk, and blues, string band music, and non-Western classical music. It's an alcohol-free, family-friendly setting.

Here's the line-up for March from their website:

Saturday, March 20th at 8pm ($13 advanced / $15 at door)
Andrew Oliver Kora Band combines elements of jazz and traditional West African music to create a unique soul-stirring sound.

Sunday, March 21st at 11am ($9.99 / infants that are not yet walking are free)
Dance Tunes, Birdsong, and a Krummhorn with Charles Coldwell
Some kinds of music are inherently age-inclusive. KidsAcoustic presents real music that parents can enjoy for its own sake, while the lively tunes and wonderful instruments draw kids in naturally.

Sunday, March 21st at 7:30pm ($20 advanced/door)
Rachel Harrington - Rachel’s critically acclaimed 2007 debut, The Bootlegger’s Daughter, (featuring guest musicians John Reischman and Danny Barnes) went to #1 on the Euro-Americana Chart and landed the Seattle siren smack in the center of the UK Americana scene.

Rita Hosking - Kitchen tables, springs, loss, miners, mountains, culture clash, trailers, stray dogs, loggers, hope, forest fires—Rita Hosking’s country-folk music is this and more, and always fierce and lovely.

Saturday, March 27th at 8pm ($13 advanced / $15 at door)
Jeremy Facknitz - “Jeremy Facknitz is a one-man acoustic act with the panache needed to become a star, armed with a melodic voice and a truckload of charisma…” - Sydney Hamilton, Colorado Springs Independent

Teresa Storch - She’ll draw you in with her rich, engaging voice, rhythmic, percussive guitar and writing that has roots in folk, jazz and blues–pulling stories from real-life and taking snapshots of what matters most.
