Featuring work from Levi Hastings, an illustrator, artist and full-time graphic designer. From tattooed brawlers to wigged aristocrats, foreign street food to fashion footwear, my paintings reflect a lifelong obsession with high and low culture, tied together with fine lines and loose watercolor. Raised on farm in the mountains of Idaho, I grew up on a steady diet of dinosaurs, comic books and National Geographic, which developed my desire to draw everything.
I work primarily in ink and watercolor, with occasional forays into digital illustration and comics. Artist present.

8537 Greenwood Ave N, Suite 1
Look Up Here Book Signing Event celebrates 5 years of exhibits at Bherd Studios Gallery and features 33 Pacific NW artists who have been an integral part of the gallery and the Seattle art scene. “The range of media is extensive, from aerosol spray, acrylic, and oil paint, to stencil, pen & ink drawing, collage, sculpture, photography, encaustic, and street-based installation and performance. In just five years, Bherd has created a rich mixture of both lowbrow and highbrow that they bring together under the “urban and contemporary” umbrella. There’s also a fascinating hybrid or cyborg quality to much of the flora and fauna where organic shapes are grafted on to humans, machines, or robots. Nature also appears as a series of scientific specimens, and there’s a wonderful, collective take on the 19th century (Victorian period), with gothic horror, ornate frames, and steampunk paraphernalia.” David Francis (excerpted from Look Up Here, the book)

Aaron Winnenberg is an Ohio born artist who currently lives in Seattle. His paintings and drawings are constantly challenging the forces of apathy versus chaos. The characters represented are always confronted by sticky situations, yet they remain still and calm, finding their way through without a fuss. He is influenced by the idea of productivity through the use of apathy, and the hours upon hours of cartoons he watched as a kid. Artist present.

With no formal training, Ree Brown began drawing and painting in the 1970’s after his retirement. Encouraged by his friend, artist Jay Steensma, he began painting images of cats, birds and people on paper bags, cardboard and other scraps of paper. Steensma brought his work to the attention of a gallery in New York, and at the age of 86, Ree is still painting and showing. The Seattle Stranger calls his work, “Bright, sweet, and contentedly imperfect.” Ree himself describes his process: “Generally, I’m just more or less pleased to accept whatever happens. But sometimes, once in a while there are some that are exceptional.”. Artist present.

Artwork by JoEllen Wang. As a designer and artist, my life and my artwork is a balancing act between manmade and natural. The designer in me loves zoom-y new buildings, but the other part of me feels bad for the forgotten old structures. I first turned to painting as a means of appreciating and adding value to the latter. Artist present.

Artwork by Elissa Houghton.
About the artist: Elissa Houghton will be showing her recent paintings at In The Red this April, featuring work completed at Vermont Studio Center Residency and inspired by her recent travels to Tanzania and Egypt. She has shown her work extensively in North Carolina since her completing her BFA in 2004 and has many of her paintings in private collections across the country. Her first undergraduate exhibition sold every painting and she continues to sell her art, now on both coasts, since her recent move to Seattle. Drawn to contemporary abstract art as well as impressionism, she studied under NY- based abstract- expressionist artist, Cora Cohen and a small group of like-minded students. Her paintings are often an invitation for meditation, as she allows her art to whisper when so many must scream. Artists present.

Made Sewing Studio: 8408 Greenwood Ave N
Paintings by Samuel Bjorkland. Artist present.

Makeda Coffee: 153 N 78th Street
Artwork by Cheryl Olmstead. My medium is encaustic, which is the process of working with molten beeswax, dammar, resin and pigments. I apply beeswax to birch wood panels and fuse each application. Unlike other paints, encaustic is never wet or dry – it goes from a liquid to a solid state and back again in seconds. My pieces are not premeditated; they come as I paint. Inspired by color, texture and finished with fire, I feel inspired, understood and accepted by beeswax. Artist present.

Monkey Grind: 518 N 85th Street

Join us for DIALOGUES WITH CLOTH by local fiber artist Peggy O'Heron in the Phinney Center Gallery in April 2012. This body of work began as a question, asking how she could capture the essence of relationships and the tone of conversations on the surface of a piece of cloth? She uses the simple marks of circles, squares and grid patterns all uniquely expressed by hand-made tools and hand-mixed colors. The marks and colors and an expanse of white silk take on identities and converse with one another. Artist present.

George Jennings began his life at a very early age immersed in the world of fine art receiving his very first art lessons from his grandfather, accomplished fine art painter the late John N. Robinson, in his hometown of Washington, D.C. When George was a child, his grandfather taught him the fundamentals of art. As a teenager, George spent a year at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, where he more advanced art instruction. George also credits the unlimited access to the Smithsonian galleries in his hometown (spending most of his time on the weekends there during his childhood) as a strong source of inspiration for his future art career. While growing up, George entered many regional art competitions, winning many awards competing against his peers at the time. After high school, George continued to paint and learn various art techniques through self-training and eventually began entering art contests as an adult, participating in group exhibits and having solo exhibitions. Paul Knutzen is a local artist who grew up in Seattle and currently lives on Beacon Hill. After attending art school in Seattle, Paul spent over a decade in the video game industry designing and developing 3d environments. Much of his work reflects a strong affinity for architecture and the organic nature that can be seen in it.

“When I was a kid I was captivated with the Surrealists and how differently people could perceive the world. When I can’t come up with something to work on I’ll grab a camera and wander the different areas of the city, checking out buildings, trains, signage, and graffiti; the eclectic blend of people, dizzying color, and clamor of the streets is always inspiring.” Artist Present.

Bherd Studios Gallery (Greenwood Collective)
8537 Greenwood Ave N, Suite 1
Look Up Here celebrates 5 years of exhibits at Bherd Studios Gallery and features 33 Pacific NW artists who have been an integral part of the gallery and the Seattle art scene. In addition to the exhibit, a book under the same title features all 33 artists with a book signing event in April. The belief that the Seattle art scene is ripe for recognition has been Bherd's main mission to promote the promising talents of local urban and contemporary artists. While the gallery has shown well over a hundred different artists throughout the last 5 years, these 33 artists have been especially productive within their own careers and have been involved within the art community through creating events and supporting other artists along the way. Many of these artists have also participated in multiple projects, exhibits, and curated shows at the gallery, which truly shows their passion for their work and for their peers.

In the last few years she has devoted herself to the watercolor medium.

She carries her paints into Washington’s Cascade Mountains, the Canadian Rockies, by the shores of the Columbia River, underneath the overhangs of barns, to the ledges of the Grand Canyon – in short, throughout the North American West.

Meshie and Liz are two artists who together create a type of art that blends both their very different artistic abilities. Meshie is very much an abstract artist and expert colorist with a love of working on a very large scale. Her palette always includes textures with iridescent and metallic which make the changes of natural light an important component of her art. She has sold major pieces in the US and overseas. Liz is a lover of architectural forms with a high degree of experience in representational drawing and modeling 3D environments and objects for computer simulations. She studied art, architecture and enjoys drawing the most. Sketching figures and architectural forms is her passion.

Liz and Meshie discover when offering up opinions on each other’s various art projects that they both push each other in new and interesting directions. When they go so far as to ‘pass the brush’ they find that with this unusual collaboration they create a wholly unique style of art that neither creates by herself. She does not attempt a definitive answer, but rather explores the joy of not knowing where fact ends and fiction begins.

His work features multi-faceted interpretations of emotion and perception by utilizing shared lines, forms and color between characters. He has worked diligently to create pieces that the viewer can study and be able to see new perspectives each time they go back. In The Showroom, Bherd represented artists Siolo Thompson, CASH & John Osgood featuring their recent works.

About the Artists:
Thompson is interested in exploring through image, the human need for narrative and our relationship to our own histories and the stories of other lives. In her paintings she imbues animals and robots with totemic powers and she attempts to bring a sense of history to all of her subjects. Osgood paints idiosyncratic characters and animals with a bold palette. He's a people watcher and enjoys spending time following the emotions that flicker throughout a person’s face during an interaction - his art is the expression of these every day emotions. CASH's latest work has been influenced by John James Audubon, Pablo Picasso, Jean Michel Basquiat, hand drawn fonts and street art and graffiti. He uses spray paint, acrylic, charcoal and oil pastels to create his works on canvas, paper, and wood. His paintings reflect the textures of the city, as well as the colors and spontaneity found in nature.

Lynn enjoys all variations of art and has explored many techniques, but seems to lean toward collage and multidimensional acrylics. She is a self taught painter and has learned her techniques through many "happy accidents". Lynn created her mixed-media paintings to explore her interests and fascination with old buildings and unique architecture. She loves and admires anything old... something that has a story all its own. She enjoys abstract art, due to each individual that views a painting will have a different opinion or "view'. Lynn loves to hear what people "see" within her paintings, it motivates her to create more.
Her little "friends" are a new addition to her art family. She started with abstract... and am now exploring an interest in painting people. Lynn’s "people" are a little twisted... but, fun. Check out Lynn’s webite, www.hollowmoonz.com to learn more and see some of her work. Artist present.

"Crowspin" by Kamilla White

Two Birds Tattoo: 7408 Greenwood Ave N
Artist, Kamilla White has observed her local crows for a number of years, and is intrigued by their keen intelligence and their intricate co-evolutionary relationships with human beings. She began using crow and raven imagery in her work around 2001, and developed the current versions of her crow sculptures around 2006. Ms. White plans to continue consulting the corvid community for inspiration and ideas for many years to come.

Kamilla begins each crow sculpture with an inner core of compressed aluminum foil. She then adds legs of steel wire and covers the inner core with an outer layer of black polymer clay. Once the clay is smoothed out, she adds blue goldstone beads for the eyes and draws in wings and facial details with a pin tool. Some crows are embellished further with clay accessories. All are baked in the home oven. After baking, the legs are painted black and the crow is given a charm to wear around its neck on a thin leather cord.

Kamilla White earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Washington State University. Her affinity for three-dimensional art spilled over into her paintings during her last year at WSU, when she used cast paper masks and body parts in several pieces for her senior thesis project. A minor emphasis in Ceramics allowed her to explore her sculptural inclinations and develop her 3D visions. Kamilla has been using polymer clay in her artwork since the mid-1990s. Artist present.
